On Tuesday, January 6th state comptroller Kelly Hancock visited Hillsboro’s Overflow Coffee, organized by the Hill County Republican Party. The comptroller annouced in January he will send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose districts $1.2 billion in local sales tax allocations for January, 4.9 percent more than in January 2025. The Comptroller is the chief steward of the state’s finances, acting as tax collector, chief accountant, chief revenue estimator and chief treasurer for all of state government, in addition to administering a number of other programs. See more information on recent economic impact of the Comptroller of the 8th largest economy in the world at this link. Also of note, the Hillsboro City Manager Megan Henderson will be at a lunch hosted by the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, January 20th. Reservations are required for the Quarterly Connection Lunch. Please call 254-582-2481 or email memberservices@hillsborochamber.org.

The lunches are open to local businesses and local citizens who seek to have greater understanding, immersion, and connection as our city and county looks to the future. Chamber and Lions Club membership is not required to attend this event.

The Hill County Fair returns January 11th through 17th. See the full schedule of showtimes, and make a plan to enjoy a day at the fair (or two or three (or all of them).

Come hungry. The fair has a concession stand with the best char grilled burger in town, and it only happens once a year. All proceeds benefit the local Hill County 4H program.

Author Mary Helen Dodson is stopping in Hillsboro on her Texas book tour in February. There will be three opportunities to meet the author, and pick up a copy of her new book, The Architecture of Wesley Clark Dodson.

During these presentation and book signing events, May Helen Dodson will share the story of her great-grandfather’s remarkable career — from rebuilding his life after the Civil War, to designing courthouses, jails, churches, and schools that shaped civic life across Texas.

Of special significance to Hillsboro, Texas, Dodson was the architect of Hill County Courthouse and the Hill County Cell Block Museum.

Featuring highlights of his most notable works, this presentations will offer fresh insights into Dodson’s lasting architectural legacy, and the landmark structures in Hillsboro and in 15 other Texas counties.

The Speaker:
Mary Helen Dodson is retired from her career as a test developer for Educational Testing Service of Princeton, New Jersey, where she was awarded a US patent for online assessment technology. She currently resides in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
